Phuoc Tich is a village dating back to the 15th century, located 37 kilometers to the north of the Viet Nam central province of Thua Thien Hue. Your two-day visit to this beautiful area will charm you with the many cultural and architectural delights that you will experience.

Professor Dr. Arch Hoang Dao Kinh, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Association of Architects, said “Phuoc Tich has all of the cultural elements of an ancient Vietnamese village that other villages in the country have not been able to maintain”.

The quaint village runs along the gentle O Lau River with charming winding walkways along the river’s edge. You will experience the local cultural way of being in the  traditional crafts, old communal houses, temples, river wharfs, and spacious ancient houses nestling in lines of evergreen trees. These are all typical features demonstrating this old village’s undamaged structure.

The Vietnamese Government recognizes the Village of Phuoc Tich as a national architectural relic. It is acknowledged as an important site for the preservation of traditional values as well as opportunities for tourists to experience the nature of Viet Nam.

Phuoc Tich has been well known for its non enamel pottery craft since its golden days. Today, the production is based on orders only. The local authority is working with local artisans to support them in creating pottery products that are of high aesthetic value.

You can visit Phuoc Tich ancient houses (known as “Nha Ruong”) which are between 100 to 500 years old and still well preserved. You will stay in an ancient traditional house 130 years old. Almost all of the houses are built from ironwood with tiled roofs and graceful green fences. There are lacquered vertical boards running within the house structure except for the space in front of the alter where the boards run horizontally.  You can join in cooking with your host before sitting down with them and enjoying the delicious traditional food.  You can interact with the elders about the history and cultural practices. You will also meet and chat with other locals to learn more about Vietnamese family life in the village.   You can also  take part in making a popular local cake made from rice flour mixed with green bean.....hmn, very delicious!

The area is truly lovely and very peaceful. A bike ride on the red-brick path along the river will show you more of the natural  beauty of the scenery. You will also see the communal house that is used for worship, see the traces of Cham culture relics and the craft of rice flour making that is used for local dishes. The river wharfs are charming and lead to a neighboring village known for woodcarving and making Nha Ruong’s house frames.

Tet Festivities at Phuoc Tich Village

This special trip to Phuoc Tich Village is open and flexible. The aim is for you to explore and fully and immerse yourself in the profoundly traditional cultural and religious festival of TET. It is of extreme importance to all Vietnamese people and embodies the spirit of the most scared event for the Vietnamese people in their New Year celebrations.  As well as join in with the festivities, you will visit the old village which is of cultural and architectural value with the hundred year relics such as old wooden houses (Nha Ruong), communal houses for the worship, old pottery making handcraft, Cham relics and twelve river wharfs all set in idyllic beautiful scenery.

During the first day of Tet, you can stroll down some winding alleys to visit the historical sites, such as an old pottery kiln. The pottery making craft has not been practiced as frequently as before due to drawbacks but it will help you to learn more and we will get an artisan to talk about its history. You will meet and have contacts with friendly locals who will be busy making the food specialties of Tet such as square Earth cake (called Banh Chung, a “must” during Tet and symbol of the earth), Banh Tet (round shaped glutinous rice cake), pickled vegetables and many kinds of preserved jams of various fruits.

Tet is also an opportunity for people to decorate their houses and ancestral altars. You will hear about the origin, legend and the reason why they do these activities.

Dinner is made with fresh local food and, if you choose, you can share in the preparation of the meal with your host. You spend the night at the Homestay in Nha Ruong.
